Filmmakers Urged To Familiarize and Comply with Laws Governing the Industry

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has called upon established and upcoming filmmakers to familiarize themselves and comply with the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya that regulates the creation, broadcasting, distribution, possession and exhibition of film and broadcast content.

While facilitating a training session for the Film Fupi Academy students in Nairobi on Tuesday 23rd April 2024, the Board’s Ag. Licensing Manager, Mr. Marcos Masiga, said that complying with the established laws and regulations is key in spurring the growth of the film industry, as well as the larger Creative Economy.

During the forum, the students were sensitized about the Board's regulatory mandate (Film Registration, Classification, Licensing, and Compliance), as stipulated in Cap, 222, as well as other programs and campaigns spearheaded by the Board.

Mr. Masiga reiterated the KFCB’s commitment to creating a facilitative regulatory environment  for the film industry to thrive in line with the Fifth Pillar of Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), as well as the Talanta Hela Initiative, being driven by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

The training forum was in line with the KFCB’s Stakeholder Engagement Policy that roots for collaboration with relevant public and private sector institutions on matters film regulation and awareness creation.

The Film Fupi Program is an initiative of the Youth Film Platform Africa in collaboration with the US Embassy, Nairobi, whose objective is to empower aspiring content creators with practical and professional skills in filmmaking for income generation.

The KFCB is a regulatory State Corporation in the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, mandated to regulate the film and broadcast industry.

Regulation is meant to ensure that content conforms to Kenya’s culture, moral values and National aspirations, as well as to protect children from exposure to inappropriate audio-visual content.
